Une aquarelle inédite; Edward Lear...
Edward Lear (1812-1888)
Eza, France
Ink and watercolour on paper
width: 23.3 cm, height: 15.6 cm
A castle is perched dramatically on a rocky crag on the coast at Eza, in the south of France. Edward Lear made very frequent and lengthy journeys abroad, and painted hundreds of watercolour views. This scene is painted on greyish paper, and opaque white watercolour has been used for highlights in the sky and a tree in the foreground. Blue has faded from the sky. The outlines are drawn in ink, and Lear has drawn diagonal lines to establish shadow, as well as washing in colour shading.
